In a world where the trend for platformers has moved towards ultra-punishing (i.e. Super Meat Boy), it is a relief to find a puzzle-platformer that has found its own way: through a path of zany, out-of-this-world fun. Tales from Space Mutant Blobs Attack is a launch release downloadable title, exclusively on the PlayStation Vita. Developed by DrinkBox Studios (Tales from Space: About a Blob on PSN), Mutant Blobs Attack does everything right with a launch title for a new platform.

Where Mutant Blobs Attack really shines is in the development of your skills as you progress through the game. Along with the standard jump, ground pound and wall jumping, you learn to use your Blob magnetism, and in certain cases, flying. The game teaches you these skills, then has you build upon them by putting you in situations to employ advanced techniques. DrinkBox doesn’t hand you all this on a platter, nor do they force you to figure everything out on your own. They present the situation and let you attempt a few times before providing a hint. I really appreciate the respect they give in this game to not allow you to get too frustrated or make you feel stupid. DrinkBox also did an exemplary job in keeping things fresh during levels so that you are never stuck doing a repetitive task.

While I am sure you will ultimately see comparisons of this game to Katamari Damacy and other colorful platformers, they are slightly misleading. Mutant Blobs Attack takes great parts of so many games and improves upon them to give you a rewarding experience. The best part is that they don’t beat you over the head with the PS Vita’s new features. Sure, you will need to use the gyroscope, touch screen and multi-touch features, but they’re so rare, you never feel shackled by them.

The game is not without its faults. Devices I needed to utilize using the touch feature going off the viewable area where nigh impossible to regain control over. This was frustrating, but did provide me opportunities to think outside the box and arrive at new solutions. I also had some difficulties trying to do multiple actions at once when I needed to move, jump and touch the screen – though the cause for that may be more on the Vita’s size and weight, as well as the large size of my hands.

Overall, Tales from Space Mutant Blobs Attack is an enjoyable puzzle-platformer that is absolutely worth the $7.99 price point. The colorful, stylized graphics are perfect for the tone of the game and look brilliant on the PS Vita’s OLED screen. The game is full of delicious (pun intended), cheeky moments that will leave you smiling, and at the end is an absolute joy – a fantastic reward for playing to the finish. You can find Tales from Space Mutant Blobs Attack in the PlayStation Store on your PlayStation Vita for $7.99.
