We had a chance to check out Donut County during our time at Sony’s PlayStation Experience 2017. Donut County was developed by Ben Esposito and published by Annapurna Interactive and is a casual game where the player moves around a hole in the game to drop items into Earth which increases in size as more options fall in. Donut County takes inspiration from the Katamari Damacy series but doesn’t seem to feature the same size and scope or adrenaline factor.
We were able to play a short demo of Donut County at PSX 2017 that felt much like an introduction to the game. There was a level where you basically sucked objects down into the ground and another that included simple puzzle elements like using a snake tail to scare chickens or turn objects to make them able to suck down into the ground. The developer Ben Esposito was on hand at the event and told us in person that puzzle elements would be more prominent in levels further into the game.
Donut County Preview PlayStation Experience 2017 Final Thoughts:
Donut County seems like a fun and casual experience which hopefully will be priced accordingly when released for the PlayStation 4 and other systems. There are cut scenes in-between levels that show the group of animals behind the holes above interacting below which help break up the action. Donut County feels designed for mobile devices with a touchscreen and will release on iOS but we’ll be curious to see what type of audience it can gather for PC/Mac and the PlayStation 4.
