Data East classic arcade games on the Wii

Posted on March 18th, 2010 in News & Events by cotv

Data East had a nice run of fun yet challenging arcade games in the 1980s that were all meant to take your money – one quarter at a time.  Majesco released the Data East Arcade Classics for the Nintendo Wii with 15 classic arcade titles including:  BurgerTime, Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja, Brunin’ Rubber, Caveman Ninja, Crude Buster, Express Raider, Heavy Barrel, Lock ‘n’ Chase, Magical Drop III, Side Pocket, Street Hoop,  Super Real Darwin, Wizard Fire and Peter Pepper’s Ice Cream Factory (the rare sequel to Burger Time).

Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja holds up the best of the bunch as for nostalgic fun factor – after that you’ll spend some time re-living BurgerTime, Caveman Ninja and Street Hoop.  Heavy Barrel should have been more memorable but isn’t because no console port of the game can emulate the special arcade controls.  Most of these games are extremely hard because characters are so large, leaving little room to navigate around the screen – something Data East probably realized early on and gave you a ‘health bar’ to survive longer.  You will most likely spend a day or two with this collection and then want to find a local arcade before returning for more.

Hollywood celebrates God of War 3 launch

Posted on March 16th, 2010 in News & Events by cotv

Praise all you want about Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted 2, Ratchet & Clank and Little Big Planet but the real reason I bought a PlayStation 3 was to play GOD OF WAR III.  Kratos is as memorable a hero to me as Mario and Sonic are to some people.  The third installment of the series promises to unleash even more brutally beautiful graphics, giant sized boss battles and plenty of surprises! John Hight (Director of Product Development/Sony Studios) teased about God of War III a bit on COIN-OP TV LIVE episode 322 but now everyone can get their hands on the game.

The COIN-OP TV crew witnessed the God of War III midnight launch at the Gamestop location in Hollywood, California.  Most industry insiders helped celebrate the release a week prior at GDC 2010 but this was a chance for fans to score goodies and meet the development team.  Lucky fans at this location got to meet and greet at least 20 members from Sony’s Santa Monica Studio who worked directly on the game including the Lead Game Designer, Todd Papy.  Friends Warren Price, Jennifer Kyle, Tedakin, Damon Scott, Beau Ryan and Roger Barr (see photos below) came out to score a copy of the game!
