Robots are just one of those things that never stops being cool. As the robots we create become more advanced, so too does our imagination of what they can eventually become. Tenkai Knights combine Lego with Transformers along with a little bit of its own style. You can take control of one of the four heroes in Tenkai Knights Brave Battle, a new all-out brawl to save the world from the tyranny of the Lord Vilius. Starting off from Brave Battle is no trouble at all, as it starts from the beginning of the series before quickly throwing you into the fray of a 2D arena fighter.
The story mode is mostly sectioned off into one-off missions with no checkpoints accompanied by large amounts of dialogue. Without this the stages would have no distinct features from each other. The Corrupted Army seems to be full of old dogs that can’t learn new tricks as even if the enemies look different, they still have the same tactics. Eventually the boss battles add some variety. Unfortunately that variety comes from figuring out which other you should mash rather than anything resembling real strategy. With combat boiling down to only three attack buttons, everything begins to become repetitive rather quickly. Sometimes enemies will drop items but besides material for the shallow customization feature there isn’t much reason to collect them. Speaking of the most promising feature the customization is nothing more than a fetch-quest filled tech tree.Worse still is that it can only be accessed from the main menu, forcing players to hop back a forth from playing if they want to reap the benefits. Honestly a more apt name for this game would be “Repetitive Robot Rumble.”
Tenkai Knights Brave Battle seems to have gotten halfway to a great game and then ran out of energy. All the ideas sound amazing on paper. Customizable fighting Lego robots seems like a recipe for success which makes the final product all the more disappointing.
