This is ‘Red Five’ – I’m going in!

Atari’s Star Wars Home Arcade Game from Arcade1Up was featured at San Diego Comic-Con International 2019 as part of the massive Star Wars combined booths. The upcoming small size arcade cabinet comes with Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back both featured excellent arcade game action in glorious colorful vector graphics while Return of the Jedi wasn’t as fun but had more modern (at the time) polygon graphics. I had a chance to get my hands-on with the Star Wars collection from Arcade1Up and play a few minutes of the first Star Wars game. The sounds and visuals all seem to be rather accurate to the original arcade units and just as fun as I remember.

The big question is how does the ‘yoke controller‘ handle all the action? Well – technically it did a fine job in person. It was a little on the stiff side but after speaking with the production staff at the event they informed me that this yoke was a prototype specifically made a little tighter to withstand Comic-Con attendees abuse. How Comic-Con attendees are more damaging than your average Chuck E. Cheese arcade frequenter is beyond me. Either way, we’ll be curious to see how the final version stacks up upon release.

Arcade1Up has had an impressive run so far in their short time as a company producing small arcade cabinet collections. No price point was given on the upcoming unit but some additional details are that the machine is just over 5 feet tall with the optional riser and slightly below 4 feet without the riser. It is meant for younger players and sitting position for adults.

The Star Wars Arcade1Up collection also comes with full-color artwork on the sides and front plus a light-up marquee on top. It also includes dual speakers which produced sound well during the noisy convention center floor and a full-color 17-inch display. This unit would look great in a Star Wars collection or among other arcade and pinball machines in your studio.
