Wizard World Los Angeles came and went – it wasn’t the biggest or loudest show but it was fun and local and worth checking out. Apparently things had been scaled down from last year according to word of mouth but the show floor was bumping and busy on Saturday (not so much on Sunday). We got to meet and interview Seth Green (Austin Powers, Robot Chicken) and also Summer Glau (Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles and Serenity) which will appear in the next video podcast episode.
As for cool costumes and gear – the usual group of Star Wars Stormtroopers, Jedi and even some droids were present at the event. A really neat Predator outfit and best group in show award had to go to the Gears of War posse which was in full force. Wizard World LA doesn’t showcase any sort of costume contest or show – so outfits were at an all-time low at this event overall. In addition to the usual comics, toys and clothing were our friends at All Games Interactive who set up a booth along the side and were broadcasting during the entire show live on both streaming radio and through www.justin.tv. The hosts of COIN-OP TV even hijacked their setup for about an hour on Saturday and hosted our own brand of radio fun while we could.
Overall Wizard World Los Angeles is a great event to attend if you are in the area. It is not big enough to warrant a drive over 2 hours or even a flight. The celebs and attractions do not compare to many other events and the dealers tables are the same kind of things you’d see at any other event. This year was a Guitar Hero and Rock Band tournament in which our friend StarSlay3r took home top honors on Sunday by beating all challengers. Best times are running into old friends and making new ones at the event with more planning and dedication this show could blow up over time or simply fade away.

Yeah, it was a decent show. One nice thing about the light crowd (compared to San Diego, anyway) was actually being able to meet people.
On the costumes, they did actually have a short, informal costume contest on Saturday afternoon. There were about a dozen entries, and it came down to a very impressive Optimus Prime vs. Mario and Luigi. The Mario Bros. were better at working the crowd, and won.
I’ve posted a con write-up on my blog, and I have a few photos of the costume contest.
I was rather disappointed with Wizard World. I had heard great things about the Chicago show and Los Angeles 2007 so I was really looking forward to the show!
First off the vendor area was nice but the quality of the merchandise was bordering on swap meet. I was hoping to see alot of newer items such as action figures, comics, and props.
Secondly the costuming part was not well represented. There was no real gathering area that allowed costumers to strut their stuff and show off their wares.
Finally the movie panel discussions! The best by far was The Forbidden Kingdom. Well worth the one hour I spend listening to the discussion of the movie followed by the Q&A. The Lucasfilm panel discussion was a great disappointment. It was just regurgetated film from Wonder Con about 2 weeks earlier up in SF. If I had wanted to see Wonder Con tapes I would have attended Wonder Con but due to proximity and being in LA I was hoping to be wowed at Wizard World. The amount of info the was put out was strictly Star Wars. I think it could have been a 2 hour discussion with some more info spent on Indiana Jones. Plus have more than one person for the panel. Luckily Robot Chicken extraordinaires were available to bail out Lucasfilm for a somewhat decent discussion of RoboChick!
So overall it was not much fun and there seemed to be a very low attendance. I didn’t see much need to go on Sunday so I didn’t purchase any tickets for that day.
Hopefully Comic Con will pickup some of the slack that Wizard World did not present. 5 out 10

[..YouTube..] Well, she’s taller than the interviewer, who is taller than Seth Green. He’s 5’4″ I think, the interviewer looks to be a couple of inches taller, and Summer Glau was a couple inches taller than her. So she is probably about 5’8″ or so, which makes her above average height. I’ll have to check the internet to see if my deduction is correct. 🙂
