The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild took home 3 major awards at The Game Awards for ‘Game of the Year’, ‘Best Action/Adventure Game’ and ‘Best Game Direction’ and announced the new Zelda BOTW DLC The Champion’s Ballad was available to download the same night as the award show. Super Mario Odyssey, also from Nintendo, went head-to-head competing with Zelda but only took home the award for ‘Best Family Game’. Another Nintendo game called Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle took home the award for ‘Best Strategy Game’.

Horizon Zero Dawn for the PlayStation 4 was nominated in 5 categories but left empty-handed while Hellblade Senua’s Sacrifice surprised some by taking home awards in 3 categories for ‘Best Audio Design’, ‘Best Performance’ and ‘Games for Impact’. Cuphead also took home 3 awards for ‘Best Art Direction’, ‘Best Independent Game’ and ‘Best Debut Indie Game’.
