Nex Machina is an upcoming video game from indie developers Housemarque (Resogun) and long-time arcade and console game developer Eugene Jarvis (Defender, Robotron, Smash TV). Sony provided us with a media pass to attend the PlayStation Experience 2016 in order to get hands-on time with Nex Machina and we also got a chance to chat with the developers as well.
Nex Machina is a fast paced stylized top-down twin stick shooter where you fight against thousands of robots while the screen expands advancing you through different zones and levels of the game. We’ve seen this type of game before – in fact Jarvis, who is involved, helped perfect the twin stick shooter craze in the arcades with Robotron and Smash TV.
Nex Machina looks to amp things up in 2017
The controls for Nex Machina were very smooth and easy to pick and play right away. The screen is busy with plenty of explosions and action happening in every corner but there was a fluid sense that allowed us to figure out where we needed to run and where we needed to shoot. Weapons can be upgraded if you are fast enough to grab one while running through the levels on screen and every once in a while the camera angle will change to an over-the-shoulder perspective to mix up the visuals.
Housemarque made a splash with their last game Resogun which many of us praised as one of the best PlayStation 4 launch titles so we’ll be curious to see more of Nex Machina when it releases in early 2017 on the PS4.
