Mortal Kombat: Legacy II premiered this week on the Machinima YouTube channel with all 10 episodes dropping at once much in the style of Netflix ‘give them everything at once and they’ll consume how they see fit’ format. This approach worked well for Netflix and their popular shows House of Cards and Orange is the New Black so we’ll see how things go for Machinima and the new season of Mortal Kombat Legacy.
Mortal Kombat: Legacy II is a follow-up to the very popular series that ran on the Machinima channel in 2011 — filmmaker Kevin Tancharoen has returned to helm the series and boost the production style even higher then before. Some new faces to the cast this year include Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers) who does an excellent job as Johnny Cage and Mark Dacascos (Iron Chef America) who plays Kung Lao.
We had a chance to check out a handful of select episodes this week during a preview screening and Q&A with some of the cast and filmmaker Kevin Tancharoen. Most of the panel included stories about how they were brought on board to production and each seemed a bit nervous about filling the big shoes of such icon video game characters. Kevin talked about how he doesn’t like the phrase ‘web series’ and prefers to call this a ‘digital series’ as the production level and quality is the same as TV and Film but delivery format is on the Internet/YouTube.
