The “Go” series of games from Square Enix have been some of the best mobile diversions of the past few years. Between Lara Croft Go, Deus Ex Go and Hitman Go, mobile gamers have been able to bring pieces of their favorite franchises on the go (no pun intended) with games that actually make sense being on a mobile platform. Lara Croft Go is out on consoles (PS4, Xbox One, PS Vita) so those without the means to play them on the go can see just what everyone is talking about.
Lara Croft Go on PlayStation 4 works pretty much exactly the same as it does on a touchscreen, but with the analog stick replacing touch. You move Lara Croft with the left stick, and can use the right stick as a pointer to grab the collectibles that you would just tap on when using a phone or tablet. I found the mobile controls work slightly better overall, because using the analog stick to move Lara isn’t as exact as I wanted it to be. I’d hit diagonal left and Lara would move up, and die, etc. Not sure why the D-pad is not usable for movement, it seems to be the better solution.
Other than the controls, Lara Croft Go is basically identical as the mobile version. It looks nice, and has great music, but if you already own it on your phone or tablet I don’t see much reason to re-buy the console version. One good thing to note, however, is that it is playable on the PlayStation Vita. If you don’t own it on your phone and want to get some use out of that old Vita, it might be worth checking out on there.
