What do you get when you combine funny books with rock-n-roll? Answer: The ROCK’N COMIC-CON which went down in Pasadena, California over the Memorial Day weekend. This three day event contained the usual aspects of a small, first time comic book convention like a dealers hall, autograph area and panels but new to the formula was the incursion of music.
Outside was a small stage with local and indie artists performing during the afternoon, inside, we witnessed a pirate garbed band performing rock tunes (pictured below) and apparently more music was scheduled for later in the evening but we didn’t stick around that long.
Like most first-time events, the Rock’N Comic-Con had its fair share of hiccups. The dealer hall was pretty empty with tons of empty booth space and little excitement to be found inside. The biggest name at the event was STAN LEE who seemed eager enough to pose for pictures with swarming fans. Information about panels and performances was in short supply, leading to the ‘what now’ question after two hours of roaming the dealer hall. We hope that if this convention returns next year that they devote time to planning, information sharing and better coordination.
Hiccups? It was a freaking trainwreck. Artists and vendors felt screwed by the entire event. It made even the worst fanboy ran cons look professionals.
A hiccup is something small, this “con”vention was a disaster from the moment they started the event.
Also, swarms of fans? They were carted in just for the Stan Lee appearance. After that, they all took off and left the entire disaster.
No local artists or comic vendors will want to be part of this if it ever shows up again.
