A video game 65 million years in the making, LEGO Jurassic World is the latest puzzle platformer from Traveller’s Tales and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Taking place throughout all four movies in the Jurassic Park series, this title is a fun experience for fans of the dinosaur films no matter their age.
Like LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, LEGO The Hobbit The Video Game, and other titles in Traveller’s Tales’ long-running list of LEGO game releases, LEGO Jurassic World is an expansive experience filled with action and lots of puzzles to solve. Also present is the developers’ signature sense of fun and whimsy; don’t be surprised if you happen to see velociraptors riding dirt bikes or wearing fresh fruit on their head as a festive hat. It’s silly, sure, but fans of LEGO and their games tend to be young at heart.
As someone who grew up fascinated by dinosaurs and pleaded until my parents took me to the midnight screening of the original Jurassic Park film over 20 years ago, hearing the original audio coming from the pixelated mouths of the LEGO minifigs onscreen instantly made me feel nostalgic. Even if youngsters who have never seen the first three films in the Jurassic Park series get their hands on LEGO Jurassic World, they’ll still be able to recognize the voices of Owen, Claire, Zach, Gray, and the other characters from the most recent movie. Kids will also recognize all of the dinosaurs they’ve recently seen on the big screen, which are one of the biggest draws in this game.
Now, for everyone who is hesitant about buying LEGO Jurassic World because they’re hoping for an open world similar to the brick-built representation of New York found in LEGO Marvel Superheroes, you can rest easy. As mentioned previously, the storyline of this game spans the four Jurassic films, which is split into four worlds on both Isla Nublar and Isla Sorna. There are numerous story missions to complete in each world, as well as lots of collectibles, characters, and vehicles to collect. The most fun though, by far, is being able to stomp around the islands as a dinosaur. Whether destroying scenery as a charging triceratops or hunting as a velociraptor alongside your pack, it’s a blast to take a break from trotting around as a LEGO minifig.
Should the dinosaurs available to play as in LEGO Jurassic World not meet the expectations of your imagination, you can build your very own dinosaur in the Jurassic Park Visitor’s Center. You can also customize your own minifig to run around as, but if you can build a pink t-rex covered in stars with triceratops horns, would you really want to try anything else?
Ultimately, LEGO Jurassic World offers a great interpretation of the events that take place throughout the Jurassic Park films, albeit toned down so that children do not have nightmares when they pick up the controller to play. As with all LEGO games there’s a whole lot of replay value due to the collectibles and secrets to uncover, which will amounts to more than a fair amount of bang for your buck. If you’ve ever daydreamed about stomping around as a brontosaurus, then LEGO Jurassic World is a fun video game that should not be passed up.
