Saint Seiya Brave Soldiers is something else. When first jumping into the game I went in with little knowledge as to what I was getting myself into, and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Featuring heavy anime tones and beats paired with a solid fighting system, the game is a decent foray into the world of Japanese fighters and will give a solid amount of enjoyment if you’re deep into either the genre or just in love with solid anime tales.
My review for this game comes from someone not entirely deep into fighting games and the genre. I’ve played my fair share of games like Dead or Alive, but Brave Soldiers is a bit different from the typical, more westernized, games. For one it features a largely 3D fighting space, allowing you to move a lot more front and back than most of the fighting games I am familiar with. This opens the combat up to some interesting strategies being that area of effect attacks now can be more easily dodged by merely moving back or forward in the environment. I found the basics of the fighting system to be fairly easy to pick up and play, and did well in my fights overall. As someone who doesn’t play a lot in the genre this was a big plus. If you’re playing for story there is a decent one, although it typically falls for some of the standard anime tropes. Characters at times seem one-dimensional and you don’t get a lot of back-story to go on. You’re the hero (or heroes here) and must save the fair maiden at all costs! Overall it wasn’t bad by any means, though.
Graphically the game is appealing and pleasing on the eyes. You get anime/scrolling text style cutscenes and then jump over to in-game models for the actual fights. Both look respectable, so no worries on that front. The best part of the game has to be the depth, however. SSBS has a ton of playable characters, some online multiplayer, a story mode, and a ton of unlocks. For a PSN title this game has enough to keep fans coming back for a long time to come. Also a big bonus, as alluded to earlier, is the ease of access. Knowing very little of the game before launching it, after 10 minutes I was versed on the story and had a few battles under my belt. Adding cool powers based on Zodiacs certainly doesn’t hurt, either!
Saint Seiya Brave Soldiers is a solid little PSN fighting game that has its flaws, but overall impresses in its ambition and scope. The story was a bit basic and the 3D fighting areas sometimes led to wonky controls but overall it was easy to get into and has a ton of depth. If you’re an anime fan or a fighting game fan it’d be worth your while to give the game a go. At the very least you’ll get some good matches out of it and spend a few hours working to save Athena from the golden arrow, not a bad way to spend a night.
