We had a chance to check out a Strange Brigade preview hands-on during our time at E3 Expo 2017 – the game is being developed by Rebellion and expected to release on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Strange Brigade is a stylized third-person shooter video game set in the 1930s with four different characters to play as – each with their own flavor for carnage.

Strange Brigade is like playing an extended version of ‘Horde Mode’ as was popularized by the Gears of War video game franchise. Waves of zombies, skeletons, and mutant-like creatures will swarm and try to kill you in large areas that have plenty of places to run and/or set off traps to kill them. You can play the game by yourself or with friends in a group working together to fight off the monsters and work your way to the next level.

Strange Brigade gameplay mechanics felt mostly smooth in our limited time with the game. Shooting monsters and tossing dynamite at them was easy enough to perform however we’d love to see aim-assist added to help shooting the traps – which surprisingly was more difficult to manage – probably because they were stationary. If you are a fan of the Uncharted series and like that ‘vibe’ than this game will have appeal in a more action orientated way. It also feels like there was influence from the rebooted King Kong movie ‘Kong Skull Island‘ to help the developers flesh out the game.
