Spec Ops The Line has seen its fair share of advertisement, banners and hype – often making me wonder if less money should have been spent on advertising and more on game development.   Spec Ops The Line is a military third person shooter set in Dubai with plenty of fast-paced ‘in your face’ action.  Nolan North – most famous for his work in the Uncharted series lends his voice to the lead character Captain Martin Walker.

While playing through Spec Ops The Line I quickly found myself questioning some of the game mechanics in general.  As far as military shooters go in the video game world – we’re used to having some standards. Unfortunately Spec Ops The Line doesn’t offer the ability to prone or jump – two things that really help ‘draw’ me into combat situations.  Jumping just feels like a faster way to ‘run away’ while being able to prone is great for sneaking around.  Some other game designs we question was the color palette – you’ll see in our sample gameplay video that there is plenty of red sand throughout the game often meshing with the color of your skin and other objects on screen – nothing ‘pops out’ as it should in a vibrate way.

What Spec Ops The Line offers is plenty of non-stop action, shooting and bad guys. Transition scenes are put together and voiced well enough to keep you interested in the story and the two soldiers who tag along with you on the adventure do provide some combat help.  Spec Ops The Line marketing would have you believe that this game is ‘unlike any other military shooter’ but the bottom line is that we’ve seen this game before and done better.  If ‘standard shooters’ is your thing and you’ve got an itch to fill over the summer then check out the game or play through the demo online first to form your own opinion around Spec Ops The Line.

Spec Ops The Line is available now for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC from 2K Games and Yager.
