Pete’s Dragon is the latest Disney live action film brought to life from an animated (or semi-animated) classic.  The movie stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Wes Bentley, Robert Redford, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence and Oakes Fegley as Pete.

Pete’s Dragon is rated PG and is very family friendly with only a couple of instances of dramatic consequence.  The performances from the adults and children in the movie are top notch and the animation of the dragon ‘Elliot’ is stellar as well.  The story is simple and pretty easy to follow – set in a town where most of the residents believe dragons already exist so when one does show up it’s pretty easy for them to adjust.

The biggest positives from Pete’s Dragon is the interaction between Pete and the dragon Elliot.  When the two are apart they act like lost puppies but together can fly, run and play games.  Probably the biggest disappointment from the movie is the ‘villain’ played by Karl Urban who is hell-bent on capturing the dragon.  Karl’s character Gavin probably could have used a flashback or something to convey his great disdain for dragons, human life and the forest in general.
