We ran a Disney Infinity preview way back in January when the game was announced but now had a chance to get an up-close and personal look at the game which we’re happy to say is coming along nicely!  The Skylanders franchise is about building up your characters (toys) and customizing them with power-up abilities and hats while Disney Infinity is about creating a ‘toy box‘ (sandbox) experience in which gameplay unlocks items used to create worlds.

We had a chance to preview Disney Infinity at this year’s Game Developer Conference (GDC) where the developers were showing off playsets for The Incredibles, Cars, Pirates of the Caribbean and Monsters Inc.  We were also shown the ‘selling point’ of the Disney Infinity game which is the ‘toy box mode’ where players can create maps, games and play areas for up to four people to play in.

So far what we’ve seen from the Disney Infinity toys/figures is that they are highly detailed and aim to be highly collectible.  In addition to the toys – the playsets will come with a variety of power-up chips that are either round or hexagonal.  The round chips can be placed under the toys/figures to give them a power boost while the hexagonal ones are used to modify the ‘toy box’ areas changing the landscape or adding items from the Disney universe.

Overall what we’ve seen from Disney Infinity looks fun – the gameplay appears to be open ended surrounded by missions that unlock items to collect in the game – we haven’t seen anything yet that resembles a ‘boss battle’ or ‘end game’ finale so expect tons of never-ending gameplay or at least until your cash runs out on purchasing the toys/figures.
