Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury kicked off the Disney Infinity Marvel Super Heroes announcement event by introducing Clark Gregg who plays Phil Coulson on the TV show Agents of SHIELD. Marvel heavies Joe Quesada and Brian Michael Bendis were also presenting at the live streaming reveal which showcased the follow-up to last year’s hit franchise Disney Infinity.

Disney Infinity Marvel Super Heroes will come from the same development team Avalanche Studios and will find a release date in the fall 2014 on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Wii U, Windows PC and iOS platforms.  From what we saw at the event it looks like a heavy emphasis on Marvel The Avengers characters – they showed us figures for 6 toys including Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk and Hawkeye.  It’s a smart move on Disney’s part to showcase their big movie franchise as all of The Avengers films including Captain America Winter Soldier have been huge box office successes.

In the new Disney Infinity Marvel Super Heroes trailer we saw some familiar faces like Loki and Nick Fury along with Spider-Man and Rocket Raccoon who’ll be in the upcoming film Guardians of the GalaxyJohn Vignocchi on the development team announced that all previous toys, power discs and saved toy boxes will carry over and work in the new game — how fluid this transition is and/or different remains to be scene.

Something new for Disney Infinity Marvel Super Heroes — the ability to level up your characters.  They showed a skill-tree on Captain America and talked about how you can level-up his abilities for individual things like using his shield and so forth.  A good chunk of time was spent trying to convince viewers that upgrades had been made to the flawed toy box mode like adding ‘structured play’ and ‘templates’ to help simplify the level construction aspect of the Disney Infinity franchise — something that was quite daunting the first time around.

Overall — a smart move by Disney to roll out their ‘big guns’ in the upcoming game using Marvel’s biggest characters.  If the trend continues we’ll most likely see a Disney Infinity Star Wars expansion in 2015 to tie-in with the upcoming films.  At the event the team announced that more then 12 additional figures not scene today will be a part of the game – most of us are hoping to see Deadpool as a figure along with maybe an X-Men or two!
