The Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) is a character and show created by James Rolfe which has been running on the Internet for years in various forms.  The show centers around the AVGN character playing and reviewing old video games and also includes skits all written and starring James.  We’ve been fans of AVGN for years and have supported in numerous ways even tweeting out the link to his IndieGoGo launch that helped fund Angry Video Game Nerd The Movie.

We had the pleasure of being included as one of the first public audiences to see Angry Video Game The Movie during a screening earlier in the month at the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles, CA.  As one could expect the place was filled to capacity by both filmmakers, cast, crew and fans with everyone eager to see what James had done with the movie.  For the AVGN Movie James centered around the mysterious but now debunked legend of the E.T. Atari 2600 cartridges buried in a landfill in New Mexico during the crash of the video game industry in the early 1980s.  The AVGN Movie was written by James Rolfe and Kevin Finn and stars James Rolfe, Jeremy Suarez and Sarah Glendening.

The Angry Video Game Nerd The Movie is a bonafide treat for all fans of the show yet does an excellent job of introducing the character and concept to anyone new to the web series.  From what we can tell the movie is 100% indie – meaning James and his team had full control over shooting, editing and budget.  James admitted in the past that the idea for the movie was something he had been crafting up over time and during his Q&A after the screening revealed how surprised it was seeing elements of his creation come to life on screen.

Overall the movie is a fun ride – it is mostly hilarious in the first 40 minutes where the characters and story set up takes place – the final act of the film may wear thin on viewers not ready to embrace the b-movie-like constraints.  It is worth noting that some jokes in the movie are extremely clever and will surprise you – James’ take on comedy is like watching Matt Stone and Trey Parker adapt the Troma film library.  The AVGN Movie is littered with cameos and guest appearances by many notable names from his online universe – if you can catch it in the theaters then you’ll get that extra added excitement of spotting familiar faces alongside the rest of the movie-goers.

The Angry Video Game Nerd The Movie will screen at various theaters across the U.S. and Canada until the end of Aug 2014 then see a VOD release on Sept 2, 2014 and then a DVD/Blu-ray release in November 2014.  Tickets are still available for some of the upcoming screenings – we recommend checking it out with an audience if you can!
