The Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie and videogame are both out in their respective movie theaters and game shops with both getting a mixture of praise and disappointment.  For The Amazing Spider-Man 2 videogame developers Beenox are back in swing again and a good variety of the game does seem somewhat familiar although true believers will catch slight improvements here and there.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has improved in some controls like enhancing the ‘web rush‘ and general overall swinging and navigating the big city — though the controls can still be improved.  We played the game on the Xbox 360 and everything graphically felt completely dated, however it looks pretty spiffy on the current-gen systems like PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.  Beenox has also improved upon the ‘open world‘ feel of the game — allowing Spider-Man to zip above or below buildings deciding on which mission or collectible to fetch next.

In The Amazing Spider-Man 2 videogame some of the villains you can expect to run into are Kingpin, Kraven the Hunter, Green Goblin, Electro and Shocker.  Each boss battle generally is enhanced by which of Spider-Man’s powers and abilities you decide to level up and there is some charm in learning new abilities in the game.  In addition to enemies we also get to interact with Stan Lee as the owner of a small comic shop and Aunt May in her home where Spider-Man can swap out uniforms.  It’s also worth mentioning that in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 many of the cut-scenes are played out as Peter Parker — giving the old web-head’s alter-ego a chance to shine.

Ultimately it’s difficult to push this game in either direction — if you are a huge lover of Marvel comics and the Spider-Man franchise than this game is probably your best bet to help extend the universe in your living room.  On the flip side of the coin – if you are a lover of gameplay mechanics and pushing the videogame medium forward then you’ll most likely get tired of swinging your way through The Amazing Spider-Man 2 after a day or two of gameplay.
