Podcasting Terms and Definitions:

  • RSS (Really Simple Syndication): A format used on the Internet to create content feeds that can be syndicated on other sites or collected by an aggregator.
  • FEED: A file that summarizes web content (often for blogs or news websites), allowing it to be syndicated on another site or aggregated by a feed reader. The feed file usually is written using a prescribed format such as RSS or Atom.
  • AGGREGATOR: A program or online service that checks a set of feeds (blogs/podcasts) and collects new items as they are posted. This makes it easy for the user to subscribe to and gather multiple content from a variety of sources. Aggregators are also called feed readers, newsreaders or podcatchers.
