Licensed games on cartoon or movie properties can generally end up in disappointment but thankfully the folks over at D3Publisher always seem to take extra special care when making games based on the Ben 10 animated show.  For those unfamiliar with the Ben 10 legacy from Cartoon Networks – he’s either a young boy, tween or teenager (depending on when you watch the series) who can activate his Omnimatrix/Ultimatrix to transform into a variety of aliens using their special powers and abilities to fight evil.

Ben 10 Omniverse is the latest game in the long running franchise history and could end up being hailed as the ‘best Ben 10 game yet’.  The game mirrors the updated look of the Cartoon Networks show (which just revamped everything either to the excitement or dismay of fan support) and features brand new character Rook as your sidekick co-op partner.

What’s great about the game – thriving colorful graphics, a heavy mix of characters to switch in and out of to take down baddies and a fun co-op experience.  What’s not so great about the game – repeated bad guys (plenty of generic red robots to fight over and over again), no online multiplayer/co-op and dying when your co-op partner walks too far off the screen.

Rook is a great new character with guns and swords that resemble ‘lightsabers’ from Star Wars.  New aliens like Bloxx (who can form bridges) and Gravattack (who can levitate things) help round out the character roaster.  Character upgrades are available and after you spend a weekend playing the game you’ll most likely wanna switch characters (Ben or Rook) and do it all over again but be warned some of the puzzles in the game are more ‘challenging’ then they should be.

Ben 10 Omniverse is available now for $39.95 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS ($29.95 for handhelds).  We’ve provided some fun gameplay and commentary from Black Nerd Comedy – be sure to check it out!
