Infinite Bits – Game Convention Miami Style

Posted on October 31st, 2009 in News & Events by cotv

Infinite Bits went down over the weekend in Miami, Florida and our friend of the show AnHonestFraud was kind enough to share some of his photos with us.  The event featured gaming communities like SFX-360, Destructiod, GameWars and more.  The event was a mix between arcade classics and also more recent console games.  Tournaments were held for games like Super Smash Bros Brawl, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Halo 3 and Street Fighter IV.  There was a special guest appearance from Walter Day and Billy Mitchell (The King of Kong) who spoke on stage and took photos with fans at the event.

Tekken 6 launch party in So-Cal

Posted on October 25th, 2009 in News & Events by cotv

2009 ushered in a return of the fighting game genre – though many would argue that it never went away.  Regardless of who thinks what – we had big fighting game releases this year that began with Street Fighter IV (Capcom), BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger (Aksys Games), King of Fighters XII (Ignition) and finally wrapped up this week with Tekken 6 from Namco Bandai.  COIN-OP TV has followed the progress of these games with interviews from all the major publishers.

The So-Cal Tekken community came out in full force to help celebrate the release of Tekken 6 with a launch party and tournament put on by ACTiveGamersLA, MadCatz, Starbucks and SDTekken at the HAX hangar.  Fans got a chance to play the game before release, snag freebies and check out the awesome Tekken van.  A tournament went down later in the evening with the action being streamed live from the team at uFrag.TV.

All parties involved admitted that the event was strung together last minute which led to some interesting ‘sharing’ of the venue with prospective NBA basketball players trying out on the far end of the hangar.  Overall, Tekken 6 looks amazing and we can’t wait to get some quality hands-on with the game.  MadCatz gave away some SFIV Arcade TE Sticks as part of the prizes and we were able to land one as well thanks to Mark at SDTekken.com! Tubefilter panel with Hailey & Brian

Posted on October 20th, 2009 in News & Events by admin

Our friends at Tubefilter.tv put on a special Hollywood Web Television Meetup in Los Angeles this week with a panel and mixer that specifically addressed live Internet streaming content.  The panel was moderated by Marc Hustved (Editor-in-Chief Tubefilter News) and featured speakers Hailey Bright (Co-Host COIN-OP TV LIVE), Brian Gramo (Founder TheStream.TV), Drew Baldwin (Producer The Streamy Awards), Tyler Crowley (Mahalo Daily) and Bismarck Lepe (Founder Ooyala).

A variety of topics were touched upon including which website to use as a streaming platform, monetizing a show, how the quality of a show can have an impact on the viewer and clever ways for advertisers to brand live shows.  The panel was streamed live on www.stickam.com which gave viewers at home a chance at asking their own questions to the panelists.  Overall the Meetup helped verify what we at TheStream.TV have known for over three years now – that live streaming Internet TV is here to stay and a viable way of providing entertaining and interactive content.

A Tale of Two Drakes

Posted on October 14th, 2009 in News & Events,Reviews by Joshua O'Neal

Naughty Dog created a spectacular, yet flawed, game in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (released in 2007). While the graphics seemed to take full advantage of the PlayStation 3 hardware, most critics had issues with texture pop-in and enemies that were able to take more bullets than a brainless zombie.

Honestly, I felt that the combat was atrocious, which made me rage quit the game within the first three hours. The feeling of never ending spawning enemies that can take multiple bullets to the head was enough for me to break my original Sixaxis controller. Good thing I had the money to upgrade to a Dualshock 3, right? At the end of the day, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune never reached its full potential.  What should have been a cornerstone in the PS3 library (and bragging rights for all Sony fanboys) was cut short due to these limitations.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves arrives this week (Oct 2009) and once again Sony fans have the opportunity to rejoice.  It’s the story of Nathan Drake, a fortune-hunter with a shady reputation and an even shadier past who is lured back into the treacherous world of thieves and mercenary treasure-seekers.  So far, everything I have seen of the sequel gives me hope and issues I had with the first game seem fixed. What concerns me about the sequel is all the positive press and reviews UC2 is already receiving.  I haven’t seen this much hype for a game since Grand Theft Auto IV, which I’d say, is a good thing for Uncharted 2.

Street Fighter IV East Coast Vs West Coast

Posted on October 12th, 2009 in News & Events by cotv

Bar Fights 2 – put on by Gootecks and his followers – went down over the weekend as a unique and special tribute to Street Fighter IV.  Not quite a tournament but more of a ‘showdown’ between the top Street Fighter IV players hailing from the East Coast (specifically Empire Arcadia out of NYC) and the West Coast team featuring a collection of players from Southern California.  COIN-OP TV was present for the first Bar Fights, which also took place at Jake’s in Pasadena and featured mostly West Coast only players like Ed Ma and Combofiend (both on the Bar Fights 2 West Coast team).

Jake’s Bar/Billiards was revamped to accommodate over 500 spectators and media for Bar Fights 2.  Contestants played SFIV sitting atop pool tables with screens mounted around the entire building and was hosted by Dogface and Gootecks.  There was also a video feed that was live streaming for hecklers of all ages to participate.

After a few exhibition matches and some ‘warm up’ battles between fans and the pros – the main event commenced.  A crowd of us formed in the VIP area – ready and anxious for an all out coast-to-coast brawl.  Unfortunately, the cheers and crowd noise quickly fell calm and silent after the East Coast team took almost every match with only West Coast’s Alex Valle providing a dent to the mix.  New York’s Empire Arcadia came to town with the ‘eye of the tiger’ and went home as winners.  The West Coast team is skilled and talented and we can only expect an even bigger match up once Gootecks and the gang gear up for Bar Fights 3.
