NOLAN BUSHNELL announced as Keynote speaker for the upcoming ScrewAttack Gaming Convention (SGC) in July 2009.  Founder of Atari, Chuck E. Cheese and uWink, Mr. Bushnell has a full plate of history to talk about on the stage.  Nolan plans to meet and greet fans at the convention but the big question for us is if he’ll still have ‘no comment’ when asked about the upcoming bio picture starring Leo DiCaprio.  ScrewAttack Gaming Convention in its first year will also be fan friendly to the team behind the sucessful website and have more guests to be announced!  SGC will take place in Dallas, Texas over the July 4th weekend.  Pre-registration is now open: http://www.sgconvention.com

F.E.A.R. 2 challenge strikes fear in London!

Posted on February 21st, 2009 in News & Events by purpletentacle

Patrick checked out the F.E.A.R. 2 Live Event in the UK this week. Eight contestants were flown to a secret location in London, England, to go head to head playing ‘F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin’ while being exposed to a host of nasty surprises to fully scare them into next week.  All coverage was streamed live across the web to allow home viewers a chance to enjoy the pitiful cries and screams of the unlucky gamers.

F.E.A.R. 2 can turn even the hardiest gamer into a gibbering wreck, event organizers opted to make things even worse by placing game controllers in boxes, with holes for the unsuspecting player’s hands.  Various creepy crawlies, dead animals, live electrical cables and other nasties were put into the box with the controller while they played the game.  To get a good idea of this, think Flash Gordon’s tree stump scene, yet exchange the space-faring quarterback for some extremely jumpy and squeamish gamers clutching a slimed Xbox controller, and you get the idea.

To fully integrate online viewers, users of the chat-room were provided with a vote option every 30 seconds to select a different animal or object for the box.  Contestants were subjected to spiders, snakes, slime, dead fish, cockroaches, dead Squid, and shock wires.  Unfortunately, a number of cockroaches were needlessly splattered by jumpy gamers, marring the event for all bug loving viewers.

The event was great to watch, although there was only one chat-room which quickly overflowed, making it hard to have a conversation (particularly as numerous languages were spoken). Technical Issues also took the event down for a little over two hours which annoyed many chatters.

With regards to the game-play, F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin brings more of the same chilling FPS action that the original F.E.A.R. title delivered, although it’s graphics engine is significantly improved and the AI is far more cunning.  It’s up to the gamers whether they wish to add their own cockroaches, although we would suggest they don’t.

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin is certainly one of the must-own FPS titles on release schedule for early 2009.

Street Fighter IV Launch Party Los Angeles

Posted on February 16th, 2009 in News & Events by admin

Capcom presented Los Angeles with a party and art installation at The Geffen Museum of Contemporary Art to commemorate the release of their latest franchise game, Street Fighter IV.  If you were lucky enough to make it inside the event then you got a chance to hang out with Street Fighter IV producer, Yoshinori Ono (pictured with cosplayers), Capcom community guy, Seth Killian, check out cool custom-made arcade cabinets by local artists, shake your rump to music spun by hip DJs and best of all, sink your teeth into both console and arcade versions of the game.  Unfortunately most people who came out to play were left standing in the cold outside when the fire marshal halted the flow of traffic.

Those hanging around outside got to witness celebrities from the Street Fighter film including Chris Klein, Taboo and Michael Clarke Duncan walk the red carpet.  The movie’s lead, Kristin Kreuk, who plays Chun-Li, was mysteriously absent from activities.  The goods inside were fun and stimulating but the masses of people who showed up left empty-handed.  Initially pegged as an invitation only event, things got overwhelming when Capcom invited the public via an announcement on G4tv.  Ironically, G4tv’s own film crew, who was there doing coverage got the shaft and was not allowed back inside once they exited to do red carpet interviews.  The crowd that showed up in support is a testament as to how popular the Street Fighter franchise is and how eager people are to get their hands on the game.  (Photos: BlankLogo Photography)
