Tecmo and Koei Officially Merge

Posted on November 19th, 2008 in News & Events by admin

Reuters is reporting that Koei’s acquisition of Tecmo was completed today. This consolidation will happen via a stock deal worth roughly 20 billion yen ($206 million). Koei and Tecmo will merge operations under a holding company in April.

Tecmo shares will be divvied up into 0.9 shares in the collective holding company. This new firm, called Tecmo Koei Holdings, will be allotted one of its shares to each Koei share, giving Koei shareholders a three quarters stake in the new entity. The firm is seeking to have profits of 16 billion yen ($165 million) on sales of more than 70 billion yen ($723 million) by the year ending March 2012.

Championship Gaming Series is no more!

Posted on November 18th, 2008 in News & Events by cotv

cgslogo.jpgThe CGS (Championship Gaming Series) pulled the rug from under professional gamers today when it officially announced that its doors will be closing.  The CGS was a fantastic pro-gaming league with top players from around the world competing live on National TV for not only bragging rights but big money.  Details on the demise of The CGS are scarce so far but we have this from CADRED.ORG who broke the story on the Internet.

While the concept was ahead of its time and we are extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished, it became increasingly clear as this ambitious project evolved, that profitability was too far in the future for us to sustain operations in the interim.

Our goal was to be ahead of the curve in the e-sports space, and conceived of CGS as a true sports league. We invested wholeheartedly in the venture and presented viewers with a top-notch production, but the economics just didn’t add up for us at this time.

Professional gaming leagues have always struggled to gain notoriety in non-gaming channels.  The struggle to appeal and engage e-sports to wide spread outlets will go on.  The CGS went ‘big’ this year with ties to DirecTV and G4tv and Hollywood celebrites in attendance.  Many friends of COIN-OP TV were involved with The CGS and we’re sad to hear this news and hope the best as they move on to their next venture!

Gears of War 2 – Midnight Launch Citywalk Los Angeles

Posted on November 10th, 2008 in News & Events by cotv

What else can be said about Gears of War 2?  It’s great – it’s fun – if you haven’t played it then you’re missing out!  What you also might have missed out on was the Gears of War 2 midnight launch at the Gamestop Universal Studios Citywalk Los Angeles!  Don’t be upset because the COIN-OP TV crew was there to witness things and grab photos to share with you.  Major Nelson hosted the event which was comprised of Gears idol Cliff Bleszinski, John DiMaggio (the voice of Marcus) and celebrities from CHUCK and HEROES.  A countdown at midnight launched the first ‘official’ sale of Gears of War 2 in Los Angeles to a fellow waiting in line for hours who doesn’t even own an Xbox 360 (go figure).

Gears of War 2 – game review

Posted on November 7th, 2008 in News & Events,Reviews by cotv

gears2-le.jpgEmergency Day (Nov 7, 2006) meant the release of Gears of War from Epic Games.  Graphics and game play on the Xbox 360 was lifted to a new level of excitement and everyone had a new vocabulary which included words like cover, tactical and chainsaw. So when Gears of War 2 hit the shelves this week it was only natural for gamers to have high expectations. The man behind the game Cliff Bleszinski promised ‘bigger, badder and more bad ass’ and delivered in full with Gears 2.

Gears of War 2 controls are smoother then ever. Graphics look like something you expect on a ‘next gen’ title. You are thrust into a world of lush graphics with something to explore in just about every direction. Cover and strategy are important elements – gone are the days of random battles. Play through the solo campaign by yourself or co-op with a friend sitting next to you on the couch or via Xbox Live. Online multiplayer has improvements over the first game and a new feature is called Horde in which a team of five players dukes it out against an endless supply of Locust who get stronger and stronger each wave.

If turning on your Xbox 360 is about excitement, adrenaline and awesome game play then Gears of War 2 hits on all cylinders. Monsters will leap out and surprise you, the gore factor was elevated and there’s even better dialogue and story the second time around. Gears 2 – a ride you won’t soon forget!

Stores break Gears of War 2 street date!

Posted on November 5th, 2008 in News & Events by admin

gears2.jpgWhen Gears Of War came out for the Xbox 360 it was a true ‘next generation’ game that utilized superior hardware and grossed a ton of money.  It was only natural that the sequel, Gears Of War 2, would bring an even higher level of excitement for its Friday November 7th release date…..or did that release already happen?  The rumors are true!  The official street date release of Gears Of War 2 has been broken by stores all over the world.  Last night I was able to purchase a copy across the counter at a store near me with no questions asked (thanks to a hot tip!).  When I got home and popped in the game – I was immediately invited to join a game on XBL with a friend in the UK who also found a retail copy of the game for sale in his hometown!  Suddenly a handful of people were playing Gears Of War 2 online and having a blast and forgetting all about the rest of the world who’ll have to wait a few more days to get their hands on a copy.

Gears Of War 2 is amazing.   Controls are smoother then ever, graphics are clean and fantastic and just about everything so far has been fun.  Modern gaming is about strategy and cover and you get that with Gears 2.  The new bad guys swing around deadly maces and some have flame-throwers – it’s a ride you won’t soon forget!
