Donkey Kong underdog Steve Wiebe still hunts for glory

Posted on May 31st, 2008 in News & Events by cotv

img_6147.jpgThis Sunday (June 1st 2008) The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters will see its World Television Premiere on the G4 network. This documentary film chronicles much of the arcade gaming champions and their quests for titles and glory but mostly features Steve Wiebe and his attempt to face Billy Mitchell in a mano a mano Donkey Kong face off. The King of Kong was championed at film festivals across the world with much fan approval and appreciation at the Slamdance film festival where it was picked up for distribution. The DVD release of the film features an abundance of extras including commentaries by the filmmakers and deleted sequences which help flesh out some of the ‘characters’ in the movie.

As most of you know COIN-OP TV has been following and interviewing many of these classic arcade champions since 2004. We’re all anxious and excited to see the movie premiere on TV and open up to a larger audience who might have missed it on DVD. If you’ll be watching The King of Kong for the first time this weekend then make sure to do some follow up research on the internet as for current world record standings and more background on the people in the movie outside of Wiebe like Walter Day and Billy Mitchell.

We had Ed Cunningham the producer of King of Kong on COIN-OP TV LIVE months ago to get a behind the scenes scoop of the movie – you can check that interview out here:

Street Fighter IV Confirmed for PS3, 360, PC but Not Wii

Posted on May 28th, 2008 in News & Events by cotv

Capcom said that its newest Street Fighter game will be making its way to consoles and Windows PC. Xbox 360 and PS3 versions were announced, but no mention was made of a Wii SKU. The publisher did not pin down a release timeframe either, but the game is expected sometime during the current fiscal year.

Street Fighter IV will feature the usual cast of characters (Ken, Ryu, Chun-Li, Guile, etc.) in addition to new fighters – Crimson Viper, Abel, El Fuerte, and Rufus – designed for this latest iteration. Instead of opting for a full 3D brawler, Capcom decided to keep the game in the familiar 2D perspective but included “3D flourishes” and changed the art to a more stylized look.

The game also reintroduces six-button controls and “a host of new special moves and features integrated into the input system.”

Capcom has directed fans hungry for the latest on Street Fighter to the new website, which currently has a countdown timer for 2 days and 18 hours, so you can likely expect a bit more information then.

Nexon America Parties for MapleStory 3rd Anniversary

Posted on May 7th, 2008 in News & Events by cotv

maple0023.jpgLos Angeles, CA – May 7, 2008 – Nexon America Inc. celebrates the third anniversary of its free-to-play blockbuster, MapleStory, by unveiling new areas, contests and events for its Maple players. A worldwide sensation with more than 85 million members, MapleStory has already amassed 5.9 million users in North America in only three years.

To date Maplers have unleashed abundant guilds, created hilarious online video knockoffs of Nexon’s MapleStory commercials and invigorated the game’s forum with lively discussions. The anniversary events give the devoted community more ways to have fun in an already compelling and deep world of game play.

Among the many in-game events, users will be introduced to Showa, a major enhancement to the colossal Maple World. This new Yakuza-themed region features over 70 quests, areas and a challenging Boss fight. Additionally, Nexon will unveil the cake-themed monster, Big Puff Daddy, who pounds his way through several towns. GM events are planned throughout the month-long celebration, which features a Nexon Cash Shop sale just in time for summer. These anniversary events only add to the fun Maplers are already having in the Monster Carnival, fighting the Horntail or working the Maple Trading System, all added earlier this year.

The party extends beyond Maple World borders. Players who upload videos celebrating MapleStory’s anniversary could win one of five prizes, including a new computer worth $1,500. Learn how to make your video eligible at http://maplestory.nexon.net.
