The King of Kong DVD & Art Show Signing

Posted on March 25th, 2008 in News & Events by cotv

kingofkong_flyer_back.jpgOver the Easter Weekend Gallery Nucleus held an art show opening and dvd signing for The King of Kong – a movie about the top two Donkey Kong World Record holders Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell. This is the second art show exhibit for the brand new location of Gallery Nucleus (Alhambra, CA) and I must say the new spot is a vast improvement! The old location was very cramped and made it difficult to enjoy the show but now everything is spread out enough for free movement and pacing.

In attendance at the event were all the major players in getting The King of Kong movie made which was director Seth Gordon, producer Ed Cunningham, DVD commentary suppliers Chris Carle and Jon Gibson and special guest Scott C. who flew in for the event. Scott provided the inside alternative art cover for the DVD release. This cover features a vast collect of characters and arcade machines all lined up and ready for a good old fashion arcade jamboree.

For those who missed this one-day event you can check out some video coverage from G4 who was there shooting for X-Play and tons of photos from the event on the gallery’s website. In addition to autographs there was a special ‘high score’ Donkey Kong contest going on which yours truly took home the grand prize by posting a high score of 64,800 on the upright machine. The grand prize was an awesome carved statue by local artist James Mr. Dandy (who was featured on COIN-OP TV during the 2006 i am 8-bit art show).

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is Fastest Selling Game in Nintendo of America History

Posted on March 23rd, 2008 in News & Events by cotv

Nintendo of America has announced that Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii has officially become the fastest selling game in the company’s history. In just one week on the market, the game has sold has sold more than 1.4 million units in the U.S., including more than 874,000 on March 9 alone. Between launch and March 16, Nintendo said it sold at a rate of more than 120 units per minute.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl has made the leap from video game to cultural phenomenon,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Game reviewers and the public alike praise its fun game play and extensive, inventive content.”

She continued, “It’s important to remember that we have lots more fun on the way: Upcoming titles like Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit will keep our momentum going strong.”

The Wii and DS dominated sales in February. Considering the incredible success of Smash Bros. Brawl, it’s very likely that Nintendo’s momentum is indeed carrying over.

Wizard World Los Angeles Coverage

Posted on March 16th, 2008 in COIN-OP TV vidcast by cotv

img_4782.jpgWizard World Los Angeles came and went – it wasn’t the biggest or loudest show but it was fun and local and worth checking out. Apparently things had been scaled down from last year according to word of mouth but the show floor was bumping and busy on Saturday (not so much on Sunday). We got to meet and interview Seth Green (Austin Powers, Robot Chicken) and also Summer Glau (Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles and Serenity) which will appear in the next video podcast episode.

As for cool costumes and gear – the usual group of Star Wars Stormtroopers, Jedi and even some droids were present at the event. A really neat Predator outfit and best group in show award had to go to the Gears of War posse which was in full force. Wizard World LA doesn’t showcase any sort of costume contest or show – so outfits were at an all-time low at this event overall. In addition to the usual comics, toys and clothing were our friends at All Games Interactive who set up a booth along the side and were broadcasting during the entire show live on both streaming radio and through www.justin.tv. The hosts of COIN-OP TV even hijacked their setup for about an hour on Saturday and hosted our own brand of radio fun while we could.

Overall Wizard World Los Angeles is a great event to attend if you are in the area. It is not big enough to warrant a drive over 2 hours or even a flight. The celebs and attractions do not compare to many other events and the dealers tables are the same kind of things you’d see at any other event. This year was a Guitar Hero and Rock Band tournament in which our friend StarSlay3r took home top honors on Sunday by beating all challengers. Best times are running into old friends and making new ones at the event with more planning and dedication this show could blow up over time or simply fade away.

Next Guitar Hero To Be Harder

Posted on March 14th, 2008 in News & Events by cotv

The next game in the Guitar Hero franchise is destined to be harder than previous iterations of the series.

Last night, at a Guiness Book of World Records event where the Guitar Hero 3 world record was broken, Red Octane co-founder Charles Huang promised difficulty:

“We keep making the game harder and harder,” Huang said after watching a 97% score on “Through the Fire and Flames.” “It’s amazing to see someone like this break the record, even on Guitar Hero 3, where I thought it would be impossible, so clearly we have to go back and make the game even harder.”

Work out those fingers, buddy. It’s gonna be a rough ride!
